Reflections and Advice:
1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?
What sets Bodwell apart for me is the way it blends structure with freedom. On one hand, you have a clear routine with academics, service, and activities. On the other, you鈥檙e encouraged to explore who you want to be. For me, that exploration was in music and mathematics, two areas I didn鈥檛 realize I could connect until Bodwell gave me space to grow.
2.) What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?
The best thing that happened to me at Bodwell was realizing that I could pursue both of my passions that is mathematics and music seriously. I learned that it鈥檚 possible to be more than one thing, and that realization has shaped my path at UBC.
3.) What might you have done differently during your boarding school experience?
If I could do something differently, I would have joined leadership earlier, because it helped me grow so much.
4.) What did you like most about your school?
What I liked most about Bodwell was how it gave me clarity about my future. Before, I was uncertain, after, I felt like I had a direction.
5.) Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?
My advice to incoming students is don鈥檛 hide your passions. Whether it鈥檚 music, sports, or academics, Bodwell has a place for it. And if you鈥檙e a musician like me, take advantage of the chance to play for others, it鈥檚 one of the most rewarding experiences you鈥檒l have.
Academics:
1.) Describe the academics at your school - what did you like most about it?
Bodwell gave me the clarity to pursue mathematics seriously. I had teachers who noticed my strengths and challenged me. My English teacher, Mr. McMurray, left a deep impact on me. He didn鈥檛 just teach grammar or literature, he taught me about Canadian culture and encouraged me to express myself even when I was unsure. That guidance made me more confident, not only in academics but also in everyday life.
Athletics:
1.) Describe the athletics at your school - what did you like most about it?
While I wasn鈥檛 deeply involved in sports, I admired the athletic culture. Students were encouraged to participate, and it created a balance that made school life healthier. Watching my friends compete and cheering for them became a social highlight.
Art, Music, and Theatre:
1.) Describe the arts program at your school - what did you like most about it?
For me, music was the heart of my Bodwell experience. The school didn鈥檛 just 鈥渁llow鈥 me to play it supported me in ways that made me feel my passion mattered. The encouragement to perform and the recognition I got from my peers gave me confidence to keep pursuing music seriously, even alongside mathematics.
Extracurricular Opportunities:
1.) Describe the extracurriculars offered at your school - what did you like most about it?
Outside of music, I took on leadership roles in student groups, which was a big turning point for me. I learned what it meant to guide others, make decisions, and take responsibility. These weren鈥檛 abstract lessons as they changed my personality and made me more confident in university and beyond.
Dorm Life:
1.) Describe the dorm life in your school - what did you like most about it?
Dorm life was where I built friendships that felt like family. Coming from Iran, I didn鈥檛 know what to expect, but sharing space and living closely with others forced me to open up. The late night talks, shared struggles, and even small arguments taught me how to live with others in a respectful way.
Dining:
1.) Describe the dining arrangements at your school.
The cafeteria became part of the rhythm of my life. Meals weren鈥檛 just about food but they were about community. I especially liked that the menu reflected the international nature of the school, so you could taste different cultures at the table.
Social and Town Life:
1.) Describe the school's town and surrounding area.
Being in North Vancouver gave me perspective. I came from a place where life was very different, and suddenly I was surrounded by mountains, the ocean, and Canadian culture. Exploring the area with friends made me feel more connected, both to the school and to the country.
2.) Describe the social life at your school - what did you like most about it?
The social life at Bodwell was defined by multiculturalism. You鈥檙e never just in one group but you鈥檙e constantly meeting people from different countries, cultures, and interests. That constant exchange made life vibrant. I still keep in touch with friends I made in the dorms, and those bonds are among the strongest I have.
