School Notes
- In 1926, The Gow School became the first school for students with dyslexia and similar language-based learning differences. Today, many Gow students have secondary diagnoses including ADHD, auditory processing disorder (APD), language processing disorder, and/or generalized anxiety disorder. Gow students find success through the school's proprietary language remediation curriculum, Reconstructive Language (RL). Developed by Peter Gow with input from neurologist Samuel Orton, Reconstructive Language (RL) is an enhanced, multi-sensory curriculum that builds students' confidence and helps them 0master essential language skills. Personalized strategies support students at their own pace to improve their skills in phonics, spelling, vocabulary, reading fluency, and comprehension. Every Gow teacher is trained in the Reconstructive Language, so they can provide language remediation across all of Gow's academic subjects. The Gow School is accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) and New York State Association of Independent School (NYSAIS). At The Gow School, students learn everything differently, including how to live with their peers, manage their own time and spaces, and build healthy habits. In our dormitories, dorm parents provide personalized attention and serve as mentors to residents. Our residence life curriculum fosters a sense of belonging and accountability in every student. Our campus includes four student residences (2025-26 school year) with dorm parents under the same roof. Eight out of ten Gow students are full-time boarding students who focus their time outside of classes on developing their executive functioning skills, time management strategies, attention to personal hygiene, healthy living habits, and positive peer-to-peer relationships. Access to cell phones and internet-based devices is limited across campus to encourage students to build social relationships and strengthen communication skills. Gow's holistic, LD-informed boarding school approach incorporates academics, athletics, social life, and personal wellbeing.
- LD types supported: Dyslexia, ADHD
- The Gow School accreditations: TABS, IMSLEC, NYSAIS
